Fakhrul and others cleared of charges in blast cases
A Dhaka court dismissed charges against 163 people, led by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in two cases related to weapons violations. Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz accepted police recommendations on Sunday to drop the prosecutions that stemmed from October 2023 incidents near the party headquarters.
The cases accused Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas and senior leaders Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others. Police filed the first case against 59 people after property damage and fires near the chief justice’s residence on Oct. 28, 2023, when more than 150,000 supporters gathered for a rally.
Authorities filed a second case against 104 individuals following similar destruction near Paltan Police Station the same day. Defense attorney Jakir Hossain Jewel confirmed the judge’s decision to clear all defendants.
