Parliamentary committee approves judiciary funds for 2026

Bulgaria’s Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs has given first reading approval to judiciary funding for 2026, with 10 deputies supporting the Council of Ministers’ proposal and six opposing it. The Supreme Judicial Council’s alternative budget was rejected completely, receiving zero supporting votes, six against, and 10 abstentions.

The approved government plan allocates 816 million euros in total expenditures, representing a 108.2 million euro increase from the previous year, though revenues would drop by 11.3 million euros. Personnel costs account for most of the spending growth at 98 million euros, while capital investments would rise by 7.5 million euros. Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev defended the budget during committee deliberations, emphasizing that judicial services require adequate staffing resources.

The rejected Supreme Judicial Council proposal had sought considerably higher funding at 996.2 million euros, with a 201.4 million euro boost for personnel expenses alone. The budgetary relationship with the central government under the approved plan stands at 741.8 million euros, nearly 193 million euros less than what the council requested.
