Why you may not want to sign to another artist
Signing a record deal is a big choice for any artist. Today, some artists have their record labels. These labels may look like a good chance for new recording artists. However, when an artist’s label is also signed to a bigger label, it can make things hard. Here’s why you may want to think twice before signing to an artist’s label that is already signed by someone else.
Less freedom for your music
When you sign to a label owned by an artist, you may have to listen to what they want for your music. But, since this artist’s label is also signed to a bigger label, there is even less freedom. The big label may have their own rules and plans. So, you may need to please two groups instead of just one. This can make it hard for you to make the music you want.
Slower support and resources
A record label gives money, help, and a team to make your music reach more people. But if you sign to an artist’s label under a bigger label, you may have to wait for help. The artist’s label might need to get permission from the big label before they do anything. This can slow down your career and make it harder for you to stand out.
Less money for you
When an artist’s label is signed to a bigger label, money must go through two groups before it gets to you. Each level takes a share of the money from your music sales, concerts, and other income. So, you may end up with less money. This can make it harder for you to build a stable career.
Loyalty conflicts
When you are signed to an artist’s label, they may be focused on their own career, too. This means they may not always have time to help you. If there is a choice between their career and yours, they might put their own music first. This can leave you without enough support when you need it most.
Longer contracts
When you sign a label that is signed to another label, it can be hard to get out of the contract. You may be tied to both labels for a long time. If you feel unhappy or stuck, it can be hard to leave. A simple contract with one label is usually easier to understand and to leave if things do not work out.
