27% of Black Sea water bodies inspected found with violations
Bulgarian environmental authorities found regulatory violations at more than a quarter of coastal water bodies examined following destructive flooding that struck the Black Sea region. Environment Minister Manol Genov reported that inspection teams evaluated over 50 river sections spanning northern and southern coastal areas, discovering compliance issues at 27 percent of surveyed locations.
Hardest-hit communities included St. Vlas, Elenite, Lozenets, Tsarevo, Sunny Beach and Varna, while protected natural zones along the Ropotamo, Veleka, Karaagach and Butamyata rivers remained largely intact. Inspectors documented obstructed waterways, unauthorized construction activity and inadequate maintenance across multiple sites. Analysis revealed that excessive rainfall combined with human development patterns and regulatory failures produced catastrophic consequences in vulnerable areas like Elenite and Tsarevo.
Genov noted that cadastral records frequently omitted information about altered river courses, creating documentation gaps that complicated enforcement efforts. Authorities determined that only 38 percent of inspected sections met established standards, with the remaining sites requiring remediation and ongoing oversight.
