Amit Shah defends SIR, BJP and JD(U) back push to clean voter lists

Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the government’s efforts to “clean up” the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, stating it aims to remove ineligible voters such as infiltrators, deceased individuals, and those who have migrated. The BJP and JD(U) supported Shah’s comments, emphasizing that this is a fundamental issue with consensus across all political parties.

BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal highlighted that the voter list includes names of deceased people, duplicate entries, and illegal residents, stressing that this issue is a national concern. BJP leader Tarun Chugh praised the SIR as beneficial for democracy, while JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar echoed the consensus on addressing infiltrators, recalling a past meeting under Lalu Yadav’s leadership on the matter.

However, Congress leaders raised concerns about internal politics, with Congress MP Imran Masood criticizing the government’s handling of infiltrators and questioning border security. Manickam Tagore suggested Nitish Kumar could face betrayal, drawing comparisons to Eknath Shinde’s political shift in Maharashtra.
