Don Toliver – NEW DROP
Man, Don Toliver’s been on a freakin’ TRIP since he busted onto the scene back in ’17. The dude’s been leveling up his game constantly; it’s wild! We all know the deal – Texas boy done good, blew up after dropping that fire on Travis Scott’s “CAN’T SAY” on ASTROWORLD. Became a total heavyweight in that whole psychedelic trap scene, y’know?
But here’s the thing, man. After Heaven Or Hell in 2020, Don started branching out, getting his own thing going. He wasn’t just going to be some La Flame clone, man. Love Sick in ’23? The dude was messing with R&B and soul vibes… some people were like, “Whoa, what’s happening here?” But he HAD to evolve, man. It was essential. And it seems like he’s nailed it on HARDSTONE PSYCHO. This is the real deal, man.
Dude, going full-on aggro worked for him. He embraced this whole biker/metal vibe, which fit perfectly with the album’s vibe. This is hands down his most ambitious project yet; there is no contest. And the fans were here for it! It’s his most significant commercial success, too. Tracks like “TORE UP” and “BANDIT” with that rock energy are still killing it.
But he still throws in those melodic jams that he’s known for. “NEW DROP” is a total fan favorite, and we’re obsessed with it too. The way Don and those producers – Wheezy, Dez Wright, Psymun, and Bryan Yepes – created those weird, watery, atmospheric melodies… it’s hypnotic as hell.
Speaking of hypnotic, the video for “NEW DROP” is blowing up right now. It’s got that same vibe as the song, with the biker thing and the dim lighting. You have to check it out below, man.
