What is a song or track?
A song is a piece of music for people to listen to or sing. When we say “song,” we usually mean music with words (called lyrics) and some melody. A track is a more modern word that can mean any recorded piece of music, whether it has words or not.
Think of any music you hear on the radio or phone – usually a song or a track. The main difference is that songs traditionally need someone singing words, while tracks can be just instruments.
Most songs today have several essential parts:
- Verses that tell a story
- A chorus (the central part that repeats)
- Sometimes, a bridge (a different-sounding section that adds variety)
- Music played by instruments or created by computers
Songs have existed for as long as humans have existed. People sang long before they wrote music down or had instruments. Today, songs can be complex recordings with many layers of sound or as simple as one person singing with a guitar.
When someone talks about releasing a “track,” they often mean a recorded song ready for people to hear. Music streaming services like Spotify or Apple Music call everything a track, whether it has singing or not. DJs also use “tracks” to talk about the music they might play.
The length of songs has changed over time. Modern popular songs last about three to four minutes, but classical music pieces can be much longer. Some electronic music tracks, especially ones made for dancing, can be over ten minutes long.
In recording studios, each different sound in a song (like drums, guitar, or vocals) is recorded separately on its own “track.” When these tracks are mixed, they make the final song we hear. This is why some people use “track” to mean the whole finished recording.
Today, you don’t need a big studio to make a song or track. Many musicians create music on computers at home. They might record real instruments and voices, use digital instruments, or mix both. The finished product is still called a song or track, no matter how it was made.
