Hotel Materra among finalists for Croatian Sustainable Tourism Award

Croatia’s tourism ministry has announced nine finalists for the nation’s inaugural Sustainable Tourism Award, which will be presented during the Croatian Tourism Days event in Dubrovnik later this month. The recognition program, developed alongside the World Tourism Organization, received 60 applications from destinations and businesses nationwide.

Three categories will honor achievements in mainland destinations, coastal and island locations, and commercial enterprises. Continental finalists include the tourist boards of Međimurje County, Osijek-Baranja County and Lika, while Dubrovnik, Nin and Krk Island represent coastal areas. Hotel operators Valamar Riviera, Žito’s Hotel Materra and Maslina Resort compete in the business segment. Tourism Minister Tonči Glavina emphasized that selections were based on environmental protection metrics, community welfare contributions, cultural preservation efforts and alignment with national tourism objectives.

The University of Zagreb plans to launch a Centre for Research and Development of Sustainable Tourism by year’s end, offering academic collaboration opportunities with international researchers through the UN Tourism partnership.
