Iraq supplies 15% of EU oil, seeks to expand
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stated on Sunday that Iraq provides approximately 15 percent of Europe’s oil supply and stands ready to boost exports if necessary. Hussein spoke after a joint Iraqi-Kurdistan Region delegation met with European Union officials at the fourth EU-Iraq Cooperation Council in Luxembourg. The gathering included EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas and Kurdistan Regional Government Department of Foreign Relations Head Safeen Dizayee.
Talks centered on migration, trade, democracy, energy, and development as EU officials praised Iraq’s citizen repatriation efforts from Syria and pledged an additional 8 million euros in aid. Kurdistan Region crude oil exports have reached more than 200,000 barrels daily through the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline after a 30-month halt. The EU established offices in Baghdad and Erbil in 2005 and has invited joint delegations to annual Cooperation Council meetings since 2022.
