Iraq’s Safa al-Mashhadani assassinated ahead of elections
On Wednesday, members of Iraq’s al-Siyada Alliance reported the assassination of Safa al-Mashhadani, a Baghdad Provincial Council member and parliamentary candidate for the November 11 elections. He was killed in an IED attack targeting his vehicle in Baghdad’s Tarmiyah district, which set his car on fire.
Al-Mashhadani, a prominent Sunni politician, was a key figure in the al-Siyada Alliance and had strong support among young and Sunni voters in Baghdad. His popularity made him a major contender in the upcoming elections.
The assassination has raised concerns about political violence and sectarian tensions, with suspicions pointing to pro-Iran Shiite militias. Many fear this attack could undermine the electoral process and increase political intimidation ahead of the vote.
