IWAI hands over Haldia terminal to IRC Natural Resources
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has handed over the operations of the Haldia Multi-Modal Terminal (MMT) in West Bengal to IRC Natural Resources to boost inland waterway infrastructure and promote multimodal logistics through a public-private partnership (PPP). The terminal, which has a capacity of 3.08 million metric tonnes per year, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2023.
Located near National Highway 41, the terminal will soon receive rail connectivity, enhancing its multimodal integration. Under the PPP model, IRC Natural Resources won the 10-year operation and maintenance contract, offering a royalty of Rs 105.03 per metric tonne of cargo handled.
This move is part of the government’s efforts to enhance inland water transport through the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP), which focuses on developing National Waterway-1 along the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system. The project includes the development of terminals, navigational locks, and over 60 jetties to support riverine communities.
