Kenya’s ODM backs Ruto for 2027 in post-Raila realignment

Kenyan lawmakers from multiple parties endorsed President William Ruto as their coalition candidate for the 2027 election after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga died on Oct. 15. Nyaribari Chache Representative Zaheer Jhanda from the United Democratic Alliance announced Ruto would lead a coalition of UDA, ODM, Ford-Kenya, UDM, KANU, and allied organizations through 2032. Ruto pledged to preserve ODM from fragmentation at Odinga’s burial in Bondo and said the party must remain robust to ensure governmental stability.

Alego Usonga Representative Samuel Atandi from ODM transferred his allegiance to Ruto and cited political loyalty lessons learned from Odinga. The president stated the coalition would either control or participate in the next administration. Leaders described the movement as honoring Odinga’s legacy through cross-party cooperation focused on national unity. Ruto urged ODM members to maintain solidarity rather than pursue internal divisions that could undermine democratic institutions built through decades of opposition struggle.
