Markov – US key to Ukraine peace, Trump-Putin meet in Budapest
Former constitutional judge Georgi Markov told Bulgarian National Radio that Western Europe cannot achieve peace in Ukraine without American involvement. The former politician spoke by phone from Budapest, and he suggested a Trump-Putin meeting in the Hungarian capital could prevent a world war, but he warned Europe lacks the resources to resolve the conflict independently.
Markov said the Budapest gathering represents an initial step toward ending hostilities in Ukraine. He noted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban maintained support for Trump after the 2020 election loss, and he explained that Hungary does not recognize the International Criminal Court that issued an arrest warrant for Putin.
The former judge raised questions about Ukrainian territorial integrity, NATO membership prospects, and governance under President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Markov recalled warning in 2022 that Orban served as Trump’s European ally, and he questioned why Bulgaria missed opportunities to facilitate negotiations between the American president and the Russian leader.
