Nigeria denies coup plot amid officer arrests
Nigerian military officials rejected reports on Saturday that officers faced arrest for plotting a government overthrow. Defense information director Tukur Gusau said claims about coup allegations were completely false, but he did not identify specific news organizations making such assertions.
Sahara Reporters and Premium Times reported on Saturday that at least 16 officers planned to remove President Bola Tinubu from power. The military announced earlier this month that 16 officers were detained for disciplinary violations, but the two outlets cited defense sources linking the arrests to overthrow schemes.
The armed forces said earlier in October that a routine military exercise led to officer arrests for indiscipline and regulation breaches. Investigators found grievances stemmed from career stagnation caused by repeated promotion examination failures and other concerns.
Gusau described the investigation on Saturday as a standard internal procedure for maintaining discipline and professionalism within military ranks. Nigeria has experienced multiple military takeovers since gaining independence from Britain, and the country spent much of the 20th century under military rule before establishing civilian governance more than 25 years ago.
