Pakistan police accused of evicting transgender community in Peshawar
Leaders of Pakistan’s transgender community have accused police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of evicting their members from several districts in Peshawar. Transgender activists claim that the police have failed to take action against extortionists, kidnappers, and killers targeting their community.
Farzana Riaz, President of the Transgender Community Organisation, condemned the “persecution” of transgender people, alleging that criminals are allowed to operate freely, sometimes with police protection. She also accused the police of forcibly evicting transgender individuals from their homes in Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, and other areas.
Riaz said the community has repeatedly sought help from authorities but was denied support. She also criticized the police for encouraging local leaders to drive transgender people from their communities. Despite efforts, no justice has been served for the 158 transgender people killed in the province since 2015.
