Parliament overrules president’s veto on army retirement age changes
Bulgarian lawmakers rejected presidential objections to military legislation that extends mandatory retirement ages by two years for armed forces personnel. The override will retain approximately 847 service members who would otherwise separate, including 510 soldiers, 159 officers, 154 sergeants and 24 officer candidates.
President Rumen Radev had urged refinements to provisions governing academic career advancement, service duration calculations, compensation frameworks and leave policies. His message emphasized protecting military personnel from adverse consequences while addressing workforce gaps.
Defense officials expect the retained personnel to help reduce staffing shortfalls across branches over the coming years.
