Piyush Goyal highlights India’s new position of strength in global trade

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted India’s significant shift in recent years, saying the country now negotiates trade deals from a position of strength. He emphasized India’s growing economic confidence and global standing, especially in Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and other trade arrangements.

Speaking at the 105th Assocham AGM in New Delhi, Goyal explained that India now focuses on partnerships with nations that are not direct competitors, ensuring fair and balanced trade. He stressed that India no longer enters into imbalanced FTAs but seeks deals that protect domestic industries, boost exports, and foster investment and technology exchange.

Goyal noted that India’s foreign exchange reserves are strong at $700 billion, reflecting the economy’s solid foundation. He added that India is now recognized globally as an important and trusted trading partner, with its passport gaining respect worldwide.

He pointed out that, despite global challenges, India remains the fastest-growing economy. The recent IMF forecast of 6.6% growth and low retail inflation in September reflect India’s resilience. Goyal also mentioned India’s progress in renewable energy, with a goal of 500 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030, making it a top destination for clean energy and data center investments.
