PM Modi champions India’s river transport, targets 200 million tonnes by 2030

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s progress in developing its waterways into vital river transport infrastructure, boosting logistics and tourism. He praised India’s rivers, calling them “highways of progress” on X.

PM Modi shared an article by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, which discussed the revitalization of India’s rivers. Sonowal explained how rivers, once key transportation routes, had been replaced by roads and rails but are now being rejuvenated with government support, thanks to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

India now has over 14,500 km of navigable waterways, with 111 declared national waterways, up from just five in 2014. This shift is lowering transport costs, reducing emissions, and supporting multimodal connectivity. The government aims to increase cargo movement from 145 million tonnes in 2024-25 to 200 million tonnes by 2030 and 250 million tonnes by 2047.

River tourism is also growing, with the number of cruises rising from five to 25, and terminals being upgraded to offer sustainable and luxurious experiences.
