Rev. Josh Laryea decries commercialisation of Ghana gospel music

A gospel musician and pastor criticized the declining spiritual focus of Ghana’s religious music industry. Rev. Josh Laryea told Number 1 FM that contemporary gospel songs emphasize personal success rather than Christ’s redemptive message, and he said believers have abandoned their relationship with God for self-promotion.

The pastor warned on the broadcast that churches risk losing spiritual authority if musicians prioritize fame and wealth over ministry. He argued that salvation through Christ remains the most important blessing for believers to celebrate in song.

Industry observers remain divided on the issue. Some defend artists’ rights to earn income from their work, while others share Laryea’s view that commercial ambitions undermine the genre’s religious authenticity.
