Russia moves to draft reservists for foreign military operations
Russia’s legislative commission approved a bill allowing the military to call up reservists for active duty during counter-terrorism operations or military actions abroad. The new law amends the federal defense law, permitting reservists, who have signed contracts with the defense ministry, to be drafted for specific defense tasks, even in peacetime.
Previously, reservists could only be called up in times of war or mobilization. The change will enable them to be called to special military training camps during non-war periods. Legal expert Igor Cherepanov clarified that the amendments apply solely to those with reservist contracts, not all military service liabilities.
