Thousands mourn Raila Odinga at state funeral in Nairobi

Thousands of people are attending Raila Odinga’s state funeral at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. Many mourners are holding flags, portraits, and wearing T-shirts with his image to honor him. Security is tight around the stadium after unrest occurred during the body-viewing ceremony the day before, when at least three people died due to clashes with police.

Leaders from Somalia and Ethiopia are attending the funeral. As Odinga’s body arrived, mourners sang and chanted his famous slogan “Raila usilale, bado mapambano,” meaning “Raila, don’t sleep, the struggle is not over.” His widow, Ida, urged peace and unity, while former President Uhuru Kenyatta shared fond memories of working with Odinga.

The ceremony also included a moment of reflection from Bishop David Kodia, who praised Odinga for never using his power to intimidate others. On Saturday, Odinga’s body will be taken to Kisumu, his political stronghold, before being laid to rest on Sunday in Bondo, as per his wishes.
