Trump doubts Ukraine can win war against Russia

President Donald Trump stated on Monday that Ukraine lacks the capacity to defeat Russia, but acknowledged the unpredictable nature of warfare could allow any outcome. Trump told reporters that combat deaths reach 5,000 to 7,000 servicemen weekly on both sides, and most casualties result from military rather than civilian targeting. The president reversed his earlier assessment from last month when he suggested Ukraine might recover all lost territory.

Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, and both leaders confirmed plans for another meeting in Budapest after their August session in Anchorage. Moscow demands Ukrainian military withdrawal from annexed regions as a peace condition, but Kyiv rejects territorial compromises. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban offered to host the summit between the two leaders.
