Varanasi idols made from Ganga soil in high demand for Diwali

In Varanasi, the demand for Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi idols has surged ahead of Diwali. These idols, made from sacred Ganga soil, hold special religious significance due to their purity.

The “stick idols” are especially popular this year, admired for their unique design and beauty. Sculptors are receiving orders from across India, including Delhi, Maharashtra, and more. Ramchandra, a wholesaler, shared that there’s huge demand, with supplies reaching cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

Local artisans in Varanasi work hard to create these idols, starting months before Diwali. The idols are crafted from Ganga soil, carefully shaped, baked, and decorated, symbolizing prosperity and joy. This year, Diwali falls on October 20, marking the celebration of light, knowledge, and prosperity.
