WHO calls for increased primary health care investment to prepare for future pandemics
A new World Health Organization (WHO) report stresses the need to boost investment in primary health care to better prepare for future pandemics. The Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB) report, released at the World Health Summit in Berlin, highlighted the urgency of transforming global health security amid ongoing recovery from Covid-19.
The report calls for a paradigm shift in pandemic preparedness, urging countries to invest in real-time risk assessment and international cooperation. It emphasizes that effective preparedness must be built on strong, well-financed primary health care systems that can provide essential services and build trust within communities.
The GPMB, established after the West Africa Ebola epidemic, recommends three actions: care, measure, and cooperate. These include enhancing frontline health systems, creating a comprehensive pandemic risk monitoring system, and fostering global cooperation based on solidarity and equity.
