Ad icon Piyush Pandey dies at 70

Piyush Pandey, the advertising pioneer who transformed Indian marketing, died on Thursday at age 70. The Ogilvy executive chairman redefined the industry by creating campaigns with a distinctly Indian character rather than a Western influence. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta and musician Ehsaan Noorani paid tribute to his groundbreaking work.

Pandey joined Ogilvy in 1982 and rose from copywriter to national creative director within three years. His portfolio featured memorable campaigns for Fevicol, Cadbury, Asian Paints, and Luna moped. He also created political messaging for the BJP’s 2014 election and public health initiatives featuring Amitabh Bachchan.

The Jaipur native previously played Ranji Trophy cricket for Rajasthan and worked as a tea taster. His siblings are director Prasoon Pandey and singer Ila Arun. Pandey became the first Asian jury president at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 and later earned both the Padma Shri and CLIO Lifetime Achievement Award.
