Afghan FM Muttaqi strengthens ties with India, visits Deoband and Taj Mahal
Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, is making waves during his week-long visit to India. He recently met Indian analysts at the Vivekananda International Foundation, where he touched on the deep cultural, historical, and economic ties between the two countries. His reference to Rabindranath Tagore’s Kabuliwala struck a chord with the crowd.
Muttaqi, the first senior Taliban leader to visit Darul Uloom Deoband since the Afghan regime change, is focusing on strengthening historic relations. He’s also set to visit Agra to see the Taj Mahal and meet with business leaders in New Delhi.
India’s support for Afghanistan’s development was highlighted during talks with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, where they discussed bilateral trade, territorial integrity, and capacity-building. India also upgraded its mission in Kabul to an embassy and handed over five ambulances to Afghanistan. Muttaqi, emphasizing mutual respect, thanked India for its humanitarian aid, particularly after Afghanistan’s recent earthquake. He also assured that Afghanistan wouldn’t allow its territory to be used against others, calling for closer regional cooperation.
