Albania’s AI minister pregnant with 83 agents
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said the country’s AI cabinet minister will deploy 83 digital assistants to members of his Socialist Party in parliament. Rama presented the plan at a conference in Berlin, describing the expansion as a virtual offspring of Diella, the artificial intelligence system appointed to a ministerial role in September 2025. The assistants will summarize legislative sessions and suggest responses to opposing arguments.
Diella manages public procurement decisions and previously handled customer service requests through the e-Albania portal. Opposition lawmakers questioned whether placing algorithms in government roles addresses corruption or simply transfers power to those who control the technology. The move places Albania at the center of debates about accountability when machines influence how elected officials debate and vote.
Constitutional frameworks assign responsibility to people rather than software systems. Critics warn that automating decisions in flawed institutions may amplify existing problems more quickly. Supporters argue the technology demonstrates readiness to modernize bureaucratic processes ahead of potential European Union membership talks.
