Apple may skip OLED, slim design for base M6 MacBook Pro

Apple is planning to switch its MacBook Pro lineup from mini-LED to OLED displays with the launch of the M6 series late next year, promising a slimmer design. But don’t get your hopes up if you’re eyeing the base 14-inch model. A YouTuber has found clues that only higher-end versions will get the OLED screen and new chassis.

The leak shows the base 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro shares a model identifier with the current mini-LED model, suggesting it won’t get the OLED upgrade or design refresh. The OLED and thinner design are linked to a separate identifier, likely reserved for the M6 Pro and M6 Max models. This means buyers seeking those features will have to pay more, a move that helps Apple’s bottom line but squeezes customer wallets.

To add to the frustration, those top-tier M6 Pro and M6 Max MacBook Pros likely won’t hit shelves until 2027, as Apple rolls out new chip designs. For most users, the M5 MacBook Pro is next up—expect the OLED MacBook Pro to stay out of reach for a while.
