Asantehene postpones Odwira festival following Asantehemaa’s death
The Odwira festival, scheduled for October 2025 in Asanteman, has been postponed indefinitely. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, announced this decision on Thursday, citing the sudden death of Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III as the main reason. Otumfuo explained that according to Asante tradition, the Asantehemaa stool must be occupied before the Odwira festival can take place. He also mentioned that other key vacant stools need to be filled before the festival can be celebrated. The Odwira festival, a major but rarely held event in the Asante kingdom, was planned to rekindle the spirit of the kingdom, but will now be postponed until a new Asantehemaa is enstooled.
