Balochistan faces surge in enforced disappearances by Pakistani forces
Enforced disappearances in Balochistan have become a normalized practice over decades due to the tense relationship between the region and Pakistan’s central government, according to a report. These disappearances are mainly carried out by Pakistan’s military and intelligence services, with human rights groups documenting large numbers of such incidents.
Since 2011, around 3,000 people have gone missing in Balochistan, and the numbers continue to rise. In 2023 and 2024 alone, hundreds of disappearances and extrajudicial killings were recorded. Pakistan’s military and intelligence agencies are often shielded from accountability, using counterterrorism laws to detain people without charges.
Despite international calls for action, Balochistan’s human rights violations remain largely ignored, with Pakistan’s government passing new laws to extend detention powers. The global response has been limited, with no real enforcement of recommendations from the UN.
