Bangladesh tribunal sentences Sheikh Hasina to death
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has issued a death sentence for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal over their involvement in killings during the 2024 student uprising. The three-judge panel found both guilty of crimes against humanity under superior command responsibility for hundreds of civilian deaths. Former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun escaped execution by testifying against them and received five years’ imprisonment.
Hasina, who escaped to India after the August 2024 protests toppled her government, dismissed the ruling as politically motivated by an illegitimate tribunal. The 78-year-old was tried without being present. More than 1,400 people died during the final period of her administration, according to United Nations figures.
The tribunal ordered the confiscation of properties belonging to both convicted officials for distribution to the victims’ families. Dhaka has formally requested extradition from India, which has not responded to the appeal.
