India’s stance seen key to extraditing Sheikh Hasina
Political analysts suggest India’s decision on extraditing ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hinge on diplomatic calculations rather than legal obligations. Experts note that New Delhi maintains historical ties with Hasina and her Awami League party, potentially viewing sheltering the former leader as leverage in bilateral relations despite an existing extradition treaty between the nations.
Dhaka has renewed extradition requests following the tribunal verdict, but faces skepticism about success. Authorities sent an initial diplomatic note in December without receiving any response from India. Interpol has not issued red notices for Hasina and 23 other fugitives despite requests submitted eight months earlier, though the international police organization typically processes such applications within three weeks.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry characterized providing asylum to individuals convicted of crimes against humanity as extremely unfriendly to justice. Legal adviser Asif Nazrul warned that continued shelter for the convicted leader would represent a hostile act against Bangladesh and its population.
