Bangladeshi diaspora condemns Yunus-led interim govt in letter to Italian leaders

The Bangladeshi diaspora in Italy has condemned attacks on Bangladesh’s democratic political culture in letters to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. The community criticized the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, as “unelected” and lacking a democratic mandate.

The letters accused the government of delaying elections and suppressing the right to vote, particularly through the banning of the Awami League. It stated that under Yunus’ rule, political persecution has soared, with Awami League members facing discrimination, violence, and baseless charges.

The diaspora highlighted widespread human rights abuses, including arbitrary detentions, over 200 deaths, and rising violent crime. They also pointed out increasing persecution of religious minorities and the silencing of the media, with over 160 journalists losing accreditation and many others facing arrest.

The letters expressed concern over the European Parliament’s praise for the interim government during a recent visit, urging the international community to challenge such narratives and protect democracy in Bangladesh.
