Bihar election seat-sharing leads to friendly fights
With the deadline for filing nominations for the first phase of Bihar Assembly elections nearing, there is uncertainty over seat-sharing, which could lead to “friendly fights” in some constituencies. The major parties in the Mahagathbandhan, like the RJD, Congress, and Left, are competing for the best share of seats, leaving smaller partners anxious about their prospects.
In the NDA, allies like Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha are also vying for seats. In the 2020 elections, the Mahagathbandhan performed well, but Congress struggled, winning only 19 out of 70 seats it contested. This time, the Congress hopes to do better, but the final outcome might still see some friendly contests. These “friendly fights” are not new to Indian politics, with past examples like the 1987 Haryana elections, where Devi Lal’s coalition saw BJP and CPI(M) face off in a friendly contest.
