BNP announces 237 candidates, sparks election excitement
Bangladesh’s main opposition party declared 237 parliamentary nominees while leaving dozens of seats available for coalition partners, energizing supporters nationwide ahead of scheduled elections. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party made its announcement through Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at party headquarters in Gulshan during a Monday briefing.
Activists across the country mobilized following the candidate roster release, with voters showing increased interest in the 13th national polls. Party sources reported heightened enthusiasm as constituencies await formal election dates from commission authorities. The opposition reserved 63 positions for allied political groups while filling most district races.
Veteran politicians and younger members from youth wings received nominations spanning multiple regions. Begum Khaleda Zia will compete in Dinajpur against Jamaat rival Advocate Mainul Alam, while other senior figures secured spots in Chattogram and Khulna areas. The southwestern division saw 30 candidates announced across 10 districts as the party seeks to rebuild its support base. Expected competitors include Jamaat-e-Islami, along with Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Hefazat-e-Islam movements. Several constituencies remain open for final decisions or partnership allocations.
