BNP reveals partial candidate list, omits Rumeen Farhana

Bangladesh’s main opposition party identified potential contenders for 237 legislative districts ahead of next year’s ballot but left dozens of seats unassigned and excluded a senior figure from the roster revealed this week.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party did not nominate anyone for Brahmanbaria-2, where leadership member Rumeen Farhana had been anticipated to compete. Party officials disclosed the partial candidate slate following an emergency gathering at the chairperson’s Gulshan office on Sunday. The organization left 63 additional districts without declared nominees in the announcement.

Chairperson Khaleda Zia plans to seek election from Feni-1, Bogura-7 and Dinajpur-3, while Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will compete from Bogura-6. Rahman led a five-hour virtual meeting of the standing committee from London that began around midday, during which the leadership discussed nominee selections and tactical approaches for the current environment. Electoral authorities anticipate parliamentary voting during the opening half of February, with formal timelines likely published in early December.
