BSP backs National Assembly speaker rotation plan
The Bulgarian Socialist Party National Council approved rotating the National Assembly chairmanship among coalition partners with 100 votes supporting the measure, two opposing and three abstentions on Sunday. BSP leader Atanas Zafirov said the party demands explicit inclusion of this arrangement in the joint governance agreement alongside policy reviews. The Levski coalition council unanimously endorsed continued coalition participation and the rotation mechanism earlier this week.
The socialists will advocate for worker income increases, pension protections through the Swiss rule and support for young families when parliament considers the 2026 budget. The party assigned its Finance and Economy Committee to draft tax and social security reforms emphasizing fairness, statehood and development. BSP expects the government to prevent disruptions to the fuel market and safeguard national security without yielding to external pressure following recent developments.
GERB-SDF and There Is Such a People proposed rotation as a shared responsibility framework. Raya Nazaryan remains the GERB candidate for speaker under this arrangement.
