Bulgaria moves to control Lukoil refinery sale

The Parliamentary Energy Committee approved on second reading changes to the Investment Promotion Act concerning a possible sale of the Burgas refinery owned by Lukoil. Lawmakers from GERB-SDF, BSP-United Left, There Is Such a People, and DPS-New Beginning submitted the proposal.

The amendments require that any sale of Lukoil’s Bulgarian assets receive approval from the Council of Ministers and a favorable assessment from the State Agency for National Security. The committee set the law to take effect immediately upon publication in the State Gazette.

Discussion about Lukoil dominated parliament earlier that day, after news broke that the United States and the United Kingdom had placed sanctions on Russian firms Rosneft and Lukoil, along with their subsidiaries.
