Bulgaria sees 41% inflation over past five years
Bulgaria experienced 41 percent cumulative inflation across five years ending September 2025, National Statistical Institute chair Atanas Atanasov confirmed. Annual inflation reached 5.6 percent for September while coffee, bread and fresh fruit prices climbed more than 20 percent over 12 months. Oil, flour and eggs rose between 10 and 15 percent.
Montana residents reported doubled costs for basic goods since the summer. Cheese prices increased over the past two months, while the restored 20 percent value-added tax raised bread prices from January. The Confederation of Bulgarian Trade Unions tracked price increases for dairy products, poultry and seasonal vegetables between June and October.
Eurostat regularly verifies Bulgarian statistics through missions examining inflation, debt and deficit data, Atanasov said. The consumer price index measures 860 items representing household expenses. Lower-income families face sustained pressure from accumulated price increases despite moderating monthly inflation rates since 2022 peaks.
