Bulgaria to accept both levs and euros in 2026
Bulgaria will allow dual currency transactions throughout January 2026 as the nation transitions to the euro, with businesses required to accept both levs and euros during the monthlong changeover period.
Gabriela Rumenova, who founded the consumer advocacy website We the Consumers, told a radio program that merchants must handle payments in either currency but may provide change using whichever tender they have available. She said concerns about complications during New Year celebrations are overblown, given that regulations permit shops and restaurants to return change exclusively in levs if they lack sufficient euro cash reserves. Customers can combine currencies when settling bills, though Rumenova suggested people consider whether mixing denominations might create confusion.
Authorities published guidance materials five months before the transition, and officials conducted extensive outreach to business owners and residents, Rumenova said. Automated teller machines will dispense only euro notes starting January 1, while vending machines will accept solely euro currency. Rumenova advised diners to clarify payment preferences with restaurant staff beforehand to prevent misunderstandings with potentially dishonest operators during the busy holiday period.
