Chattogram July families back Sheikh Hasina death ruling
Relatives of victims from Chattogram expressed relief following the tribunal verdict condemning former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity during the uprising, though they emphasized their satisfaction remains incomplete until authorities carry out the sentence. Shafi Alam, whose son Wasim Akram died in the violence, called for capital punishment against all identified perpetrators, while Kohinur Akhter demanded swift international cooperation to secure the extradition and execution of the convicted leader.
Approximately 14 people were killed and more than 900 were injured in Chattogram during clashes involving law enforcement and ruling party supporters. Despite 151 legal cases being filed, only one investigation has concluded in 18 months, prompting frustration among bereaved families. Akhter criticized the slow pace of judicial proceedings while survivor Shuvo Hossain, who lost an eye during attacks, urged comprehensive prosecution of local perpetrators to prevent future street violence.
