Dhaka to send India request to return Hasina, Kamal
Bangladesh’s foreign affairs ministry plans to formally request the extradition of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal following their death sentences for crimes against humanity. Foreign affairs adviser Touhid Hossain confirmed authorities will transmit the appeal through diplomatic channels under the bilateral extradition agreement, noting that previous requests received no response from New Delhi before completion of judicial proceedings.
The ministry characterized providing refuge to individuals convicted of such offenses as an unfriendly gesture that disregards justice. Touhid acknowledged uncertainty regarding India’s legal obligations under the treaty while emphasizing that changed circumstances following conviction warrant official communication of Bangladesh’s position. Authorities indicated they will address potential refusal scenarios if they materialize.
