Eric Chelle says DR Congo used voodoo in loss
Nigeria’s head coach attributed his team’s elimination from World Cup qualification to supernatural practices allegedly performed by Democratic Republic of Congo personnel during their playoff match in Rabat. Eric Chelle claimed he observed a member of the opposing delegation making suspicious hand movements that appeared to involve sprinkling or shaking an unidentified substance throughout the contest, which ended in a penalty shootout victory for the Congolese side.
The central African nation secured qualification for intercontinental playoffs after the teams finished level following extra time and prevailed in a penalty shoot-out. Captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive penalty despite objects being thrown and heavy rainfall. The Super Eagles, ranked significantly higher than their opponents, will miss consecutive World Cup tournaments for the first time since their initial appearance three decades ago.
DR Congo last participated in the global tournament when the country was known as Zaire.
