Communal farmers drive maize production in Zimbabwe’s Pfumvudza success
The Pfumvudza/Intwasa program has helped communal farmers become top maize producers in Zimbabwe. They produced 794,105 tonnes of maize, making up 44 percent of the national total, according to the 2024-2025 Post-Harvest Survey by ZIMSTAT. The national cereal harvest also included sorghum and millet.
Professor Obert Jiri, the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, praised the role of communal farmers. He said that while they farm larger areas, the Pfumvudza/Intwasa program has improved their yields and helped ensure food security.
The survey also showed that livestock conditions were good, with most cattle-owning households having enough water. However, farmers faced challenges like drought and pests, which affected maize production.
