Croatia battles apartmentisation to push sustainable tourism
Croatia advances toward sustainable tourism while confronting challenges from excessive apartment rentals and seasonal concentration. The nation recorded over 5 percent growth in arrivals and overnight stays during September 2025 compared with the previous year. Experts note progress in extending the tourist season beyond traditional summer peaks despite ongoing obstacles.
Josip Mikulić from the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb emphasized the need for more direct air routes and off-season offerings. Minister Tonči Glavina said destinations must define their identity and establish sustainable development limits. The country controls about 40 percent of the world’s charter fleet through its nautical sector, which generates revenue year-round.
Tourism officials plan to focus on price competitiveness and reducing seasonality. Artificial intelligence tools assist with automated registrations and personalized recommendations for visitors. ACI CEO Kristijan Pavić stressed that environmental responsibility must remain a shared priority as the industry expands.
