Croatia grants citizenship to Jean-Michel Nicolier
Croatia has granted posthumous citizenship to Jean-Michel Nicolier, a French volunteer killed during the Battle of Vukovar, along with citizenship for his mother, Lyliane Fournier. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković presented the honor at Banski Dvori ahead of commemorations marking the anniversary of the siege.
The 25-year-old defender was murdered at Ovčara and recently exhumed from a mass grave before receiving burial at the Memorial Cemetery of the Victims of the Homeland War in Vukovar. His remains were among three identified from the site. Plenković stated that Nicolier’s sacrifice and his mother’s devotion to Croatia remain permanently inscribed in the nation’s collective memory.
The family also met with relatives of Antun Ivanković, the Croatian veteran who located the Nicolier family in France and brought them to Croatia to ensure the volunteer’s contributions would not be forgotten.
