Crowds flock to Maravijaya for Tazaungdine lights

Large crowds descended on the Maravijaya Buddha Image in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday for the closing ceremony of the Tazaungdine lighting celebration and balloon launch event. Traffic officers directed heavy pilgrim and private vehicle flows along access routes to prevent congestion on the full moon day of Tazaungmone. Security personnel conducted entry screenings at pagoda gates while shuttle services transported monks, disabled individuals and elderly worshippers to worship sites. Staff guided attendees toward lamp displays, balloon launch areas and vendor sections.

Organizers held a weaving ceremony featuring 15 looms on Nov. 10 to prepare golden lotus robes presented to the Buddha statue during Monday’s observances. Religious groups chanted prayers and placed 9,000 lamps across the image platform throughout the festival period. Spectators watched balloon releases and firework displays at multiple locations. LED installations illuminated all Buddha Park structures while small business owners sold domestic merchandise, food items and traditional treats at market stalls. Musical acts and theater companies provided evening performances.

Government ministries competed in specialized balloon launches late Monday. Officials recognized the winners of the loom competition. The three-day festival beginning Nov. 2 allowed participants to combine religious merit-making with shopping and entertainment activities at the illuminated monument grounds.
