Dhaka Islamist parties demand July Charter poll
Ahead of next year’s elections in Bangladesh, seven Islamist parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolon, held a human chain protest in Dhaka. They called for the 2026 elections to follow the July Charter’s rules and demanded a public referendum. The protest, organized by Jamaat’s Dhaka groups, stretched across the city.
Other parties like Islami Andolon and Khelafat Majlish joined with similar protests at different spots in Dhaka. Leaders said the July Charter must be legally recognized before the election schedule is set, warning of problems if it isn’t. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party accused these groups of trying to disrupt the upcoming polls. Tensions and uncertainty are rising as the election approaches.
