Dubai to link cars, signals with AI system
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority announced a vehicle-to-infrastructure communication network that will connect traffic signals with automobiles by 2028. The V2X system will transmit signal timing and road conditions to car dashboards at 620 intersections. Officials coordinate with manufacturers to install connectivity hardware in new models, while older vehicles receive compatibility through aftermarket devices or smartphone integration apps.
Engineer Salahuddin Al Marzooqi from the Traffic and Roads Department said artificial intelligence will optimize signal performance through the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre. Digital twin technology enables staff to test intersection modifications before physical changes are made. Cameras with computer vision will track vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to adjust traffic patterns instantly.
Drivers will receive green light countdowns, congestion warnings, detour alerts and accident notifications without checking mobile phones. Future updates will enable car-to-car messaging about hazards and slowdowns ahead. Infrastructure construction requires two years before manufacturer integration and testing begin for the 2027 launch timeline.
