EC blocks 215 million euros for Bulgaria over anti-corruption commission delay
Brussels suspended 215 million euros designated for Bulgaria under the Recovery and Resilience Plan after the governing coalition failed to create an independent anti-corruption body as required. Carlos Contrera, deputy chairman of VMRO, characterized the funding freeze as punishment affecting ordinary citizens, municipalities and businesses rather than corrupt officials responsible for the policy failures.
The VMRO representative emphasized that the withheld amount represents contributions Bulgaria already made to European Union budgets rather than donations. Contrera accused politicians of treating European assistance as personal enrichment opportunities instead of directing resources toward infrastructure, education and healthcare improvements.
VMRO demanded that the Zhelyazkov administration provide a comprehensive public accounting of all Recovery Plan expenditures while describing the Commission’s action as damaging to national credibility and reflecting poorly on current government competence.
